Best Mouse Poisons

Mice and rats enter a home for a variety of reasons–some of these are out of your control, and some are within your control. If you have pets, you probably leave out food bowls on the floor, and this is just one way that mice become attracted to your home.

Here are some other things that bring rodents into your house:

• Bird feeders
• Garbage bags kept inside the house
• Gardens running along the exterior of the home
• Pet feces that is not cleaned up
• Crumbs on the side or behind appliances

In addition to all of the human things that we do to attract rodents, there are also structural issues with your home that could be opening you up to a rodent infestation. Here are a few examples of easy access points for mice into your home:

• Cracks and openings in the foundation
• Wires that run from the ground to the roof
• Open pipes
• Gutters
• Trees that rub up against the house near windows or doors

Taking a look at these areas of your home also give you a good idea of where to place the bait. If you find an abundance of droppings behind the refrigerator where there is a lot of crumbs, leave them there but place the bait there as well. Knowing where the trouble spots are in your home gives you a better chance of eliminating the population.

There are two different types of baits, and they each have their benefits and downsides. We are going to take a look at these below.

Single Feed

These baits are much stronger and toxic compared the multi-feeding baits. You often cannot find these in stores, and professional pest control companies use them. Since the bait is so strong, it’s highly toxic if consumed by anything. If you decide to use this kind of poison experts, suggest taking your pets on a temporary vacation so you can ensure they do not get anywhere near the poison until you have taken care of the problem.

When using this kind of bait also be sure you know the antidote and you do not get rid of the container until you know all the bait got consumed by the rodents only.

Multi-Feed

This bait is less toxic and forces the rodents to eat it more than once for it to be successful. The rodents will typically come back to the bait for at least a week before it affects them. The multi-feed strategy requires patience, but it is just as useful as the single feed method. Because the poison is less toxic, there is less risk associated with it getting consumed by your pets and children. Unless it is entirely non-toxic, you still want to know the antidote and take the cautionary steps.

Over time rodents have developed an immunity to a lot of multi-feed poisons so once they taste it they only take a little bit and it is not enough to kill them. Instead, it just makes them sick and causes them to vomit. Your home situation will determine what type of bait method works best for you.
