Almost 90 years since its foundation, Western Pest Services remains a unified company that has had plenty of time to iron out the kinks in its business. Over the years, they have found that reliability is their selling point and is what they strive for in every interaction. Even their three grounding principles—do what you say you’re going to do, deliver quality work in all areas, and treat everyone with dignity and respect—reflect this sentiment and hope for a quality interaction. Western Services is a company that is dedicated to maintaining its reputation and emphasizes a dedication to high standards of customer service.

Unlike the name might suggest Western Pest Services does not operate with any states that are not on the east coast of the country. Western does not have a national reach, but instead has 38 locations New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. It also has 3 service locations in Connecticut, but they are confined to the cities of southern Connecticut that are close to the New York border. The pest control company’s smaller geographical footprint limits the amount of work they can do and people they can reach, which is a major limiting factor in the reliability rating.

In business for over 85 years.

Very limited number of states reached, but a good number of locations in each state.

Western Pest Services’ Pest Control Tips

Western pest service doesn’t leave homeowners in the dark. In fact, they have an entire library of pests that is packed with information about how they enter homes and affect lives. This library also offers suggestions on how to better defend your home against these creatures and how to identify if they have already made their way inside. Some of the major tips provided by Western are:

• Deck: Keep your grass cut short and trim back trees and bushes, as well as your porch well-kept by keeping structures freshly painted and sealed. Level the dirt underneath any structures to avoid creating homes for pests.

• Kitchen: Store food and drinks in airtight containers and clean up spills and messes immediately. You should not keep your trash underneath your sink and should check for leaks around the area.

• Attic: Seal any entry points where you can see daylight and knock down cobwebs every week. Keeping your attic clutter-free and properly insulated is also important to prevent pests from taking over your home.

• Bathroom: Avoid leaving standing water in the bathroom to ensure that water drains properly. Check for leaks and caulk any cracks.

• Bedroom: Change your sheets regularly to avoid bedbugs and avoid eating in the room.

• Garage: Sweep frequently to eliminate any cobwebs that might have built up and get rid of any debris that could be food for pests. Check for holes to the outside and seal them if any appear.

• Basement: Keep your basement clean and organized and check for leaks and holes frequently.

Western Pest Services’ commitment to arming homeowners with knowledge is admirable and helps open a dialogue between technicians and homeowners. These simple guidelines can make all the difference in preventing pests in your home.

Free inspection

Western Pest Services offers free initial pest inspections that are intended to help you and your technician better understand the nature pests in your home. This no-strings-attached inspection will help you understand the risk that your home currently stands at, the ways to reduce the likelihood of pests in the house, and a report on any pests that have been found.

During this inspection, your technician will likely give you a whole host of pest control tips for your home and although they may sound simple, they are one of the best ways to reduce your risk of infestation. By doing simple things like keeping your home organized and clean, you reduce a lot of places that pests like to live in like the dirty corners of your garage or the cardboard box of clothes in your attic.

In addition to a free inspection, Western also offers a 30-day guarantee where they will come back until the job is done. The Western Assurance of Quality umbrella protects you in the case that a treatment fails to get rid of the pests in your home. However, the actual terms of this guarantee are somewhat vague on the company’s website, and when compared to other pest control services that plainly advertise the terms of their guarantees, this is confusing to consumers.

“Green” Treatments

In order to protect the environment, Western Pest Services uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system. IPM rests on three major pillars:

• Pest education: It’s often the case that pests can be avoided with due diligence in a home. This is where Western’s pest control tips are especially useful as they help you learn what draws pests into your home and how to prevent them from ever entering. Western also emphasizes education in their interactions with homeowners, as technicians carefully explain the source of the problem and what steps are going into treating it. Helping homeowners understand the treatments and equipping them with knowledge about the specific pest is one of the best ways to prevent any future infestations.

• Proactive pest prevention: Now that homeowners understand what can draw pests in, Western helps them implement these strategies. One of the most effective ways to prevent pests in the home is by disposing of old food, keeping leftovers in airtight containers in the fridge, and cleaning up spills and messes in the kitchen. These are the sources of food for many pests and are one of the top reasons they enter the home in the first place. Pest prevention extends beyond the kitchen though and includes putting wiring over larger holes, caulking cracks in walls, and ensuring windows and doors are properly screened and sealed. It also extends to removing pests’ homes, such as nests, that are near the house.

• Environmentally-friendly treatments: The final pillar of IPM is treating pest infestations in an environmentally-friendly way. Western is careful in the materials it uses to treat pests with and only ever uses them when needed. No pest treatment is ever routine or broad-based and Western makes sure that they don’t treat anywhere that does not need it.

IPM is an incredibly effective system for eliminating pests in the long-term as opposed to simply treating a problem and environmentalists and entomologists have been recommending it since the 1970s.

Technician Training

Western receives very high marks in the technician training field. Technicians are taught all about pest control and extermination through a series of classroom training exercises that are focused on expertise and safety when working with the pest treatments. Western also employs entomologists to help technicians better understand the nature of insects and how they thrive in homes.

Western Pest Services has received the QualityPro certification from the National Pest Management Association, which is an award that only 3% of American pest control companies receive. The award, based on 16 rigorous standards, is only awarded to companies that earn high marks in business practices, environmental friendliness, customer satisfaction, and technician testing.

Since Western Pest Services is a member of this 3% group, their technicians are trained to the highest caliber and, in many states, must pass an examination to ensure they have enough knowledge to properly identify and treat pest problems. Companies also have to ensure and prove that their technicians meet all state requirements, which is an added assurance for many homeowners.

Customer reviews seem to be positive overall, and it seems like the company does a great job of delivering on their service.

There are not very many customer reviews to draw from; so many questions about the service are left unanswered.

Our rating:

Western Pest Services has very few reviews online, something that can be both good and bad. On one hand, very few people have had horrible experiences with the company, but on the other few have also found the work to be so amazing it warranted leaving a review. Overall, the reviews available highlighted that Western Pest Services were prompt, professional, and got the job done.

Western uses ServicePro business management software to handle their customer service lines. They are proud of this and display it on their website and for good reason: this service seems to help the company with their customer needs, as very few reviewers claimed that they fell through the cracks in the company communications.

People reported that their technicians were on time, communicative, and knowledgeable. Many reflected that their technicians took extra time to explain everything that was happening and go over all of the possible solutions to pest control problems and answer any questions. However, the largest sources of reviews we could find on the Internet were found on the company’s own website, which is likely biased.

There were very few complaints available that described situations in which Western needed to come to the house for a re-treatment. However, there were many reviews from loyal customers who have been using the service for years without any customer service problems. Unlike many other companies, Western had very few reviews that claimed that the company mishandled communications or complaints from customers which is an indication that if there was a problem, Western was quick to fix it.

By and large, “thorough” was one of the most common words used to describe Western Pest Services. Many of the reviewers were floored by how quickly the company was able to get rid of the pests and how meticulous the technicians were in doing so. One commenter even reflected:

“This is a class act organization in a business that is very rough around the edges. They run a tight ship and completely rid you of ANY pest pressures.”

Overall, Western Pest Services has a great foundation of reviews, but it can be biased since they are all featured on the company website. The fact that customers did not need to resort to outlets like Yelp to be heard is an indicator that they are being treated well though.

Customer reviews seem to be positive overall, and it seems like the company does a great job of delivering on their service.

There are not very many customer reviews to draw from; so many questions about the service are left unanswered.

Our rating:

Cost is a hard variable to measure since every house and pest is different, but there are several factors that contribute to our rating.

Free inspection

Western offers a free in-home inspection for its pest control service, something very important to pest prevention and treatments for a number of reasons. First, it allows technicians to actually see the home and properly assess the amount of work that needs to be done, which gives homeowners a more realistic quote. Second, it helps owners understand from the start the types of pests they are at risk for and how they can protect their families in the future. Several larger companies do not offer a free inspection.

Free Follow-Ups

Western offers free follow-up inspections and re-treatments on their annual plan, as well as a 30-day guarantee following any one-time treatments. These free follow ups are standard across the industry and are important protections for consumers in case a treatment fails or is not entirely effective. Some smaller companies out there do not offer these protections and we would advise staying away from anyone that does not back up their service.

Yearly Contract

Western Pest Services has both a yearly contract and a single-service option, though they push their yearly contract very hard and, in some cases, require that it be bought. The yearly contract, called the Home Protection Plan (HPP), protects you from a large number of pests, includes seasonal visits from technicians, and free emergency visits in between scheduled visits. There is also the Home Protection Plan Plus (HPP+), which also adds protection from carpenter ants to the HPP plan. In both of these plans, there is a satisfaction guarantee that allows for the refund of the annual fee if you are unsatisfied.

Western makes a very concerted effort to sell these plans to you, which makes sense because they really are the best way to prevent pests in your home. However, in certain situations, you might simply want a single pest control treatment and it might be hard to convince the company to do so.

Follow-up inspections are provided within the cost, and they’ll provide free re-treatments until effective.

Costs can vary, and they try to push annual contracts, which can be very confining.

Overall, Western Pest Services seems like a great company for a very specific niche of people: those who live in the metropolitan areas of Mid-Atlantic States and wish to have year-round protection. With excellent customer reviews and service and a desire to keep homes safe, this company scores high in terms of desirability for most people. However, their limited geographic footprint and emphasis on the yearly contract can turn some people away.
