What’s The Difference Between Dunks and Bits
One of the significant differences between the two of these is that bits work much faster. Bits kill mosquito larvae within a few hours because they release almost all the poison at once. Bits kill the entire larvae population before they have a chance to turn into adults because they do not have a timed-release-they release all the poison quickly, so you’ll have to sprinkle the water source again in about a week.
Bits and dunks contain the same ingredients. The major plus with dunks is that they are more frequently organic and not harmful to animals. Dunks also release the poison more slowly, so they last longer and do not require as much attention. You can also crumble up the dunk to spread it more loosely over an infested area.
With dunks, you may not have to re-treat the area for as long as 60 days because it releases the poison very slowly.
How To Use Dunks
Dunks are very simple to take one of the donut-shaped items use-you and toss it into the mosquito-infested water. For the next 30 days, it will slowly dissolve into the water eliminating all the mosquito larvae in the water. This does not work to treat adult mosquitos, but once they are gone, you will not have to deal with a re-infestation. You most likely will not have to treat the area again for at least 30-60 days.
How To Use Bits
Bits are equally as simple to use. You measure out the correct amount and sprinkle them in the water. These release the poison almost instantly, so you will have to re-treat the area every two weeks. Within a few hours, you’ll notice the mosquito larvae rising to the top of the water.
How Many Dunks Should You Use?
According to the manufacturer you are supposed to use one dunk for every 100 square foot area of water. If you are adding multiple dunks to one body of water you want to toss them at least 10 feet apart, so you do not waste them.
The manufacturer also specifies what you can do to break them up and get the most out of each dunk:
- ¼ for 5 square feet of water
- ½ for 25 square feet of water
- 1 for 100 square feet of water
You can save money by purchasing a larger container of dunks to use over time as you need them. If you are storing them long-term keep them somewhere dry, that will not get exposed to any extreme temperatures.
How Many Bits Should You Use?
For bits, you use one teaspoon for every 25 square foot area of water, one tablespoon for a 75 square foot area of water, and a half cup for every 600 square foot area.
Bits get sold in multiple size containers that range from treating 2000 square feet to over 8000 square feet. Bits last a long time when stored correctly so do not worry about using it all in one sitting. If you save it in a dry area that does not get exposed to extreme temperatures, it should last a long time.
