What Are Citronella Candles?
Citronella candles are similar to a typical house candle-the only difference is the ingredients that make up the candle. Instead of including oils that make your home smell nice, they contain citronella oil and lemongrass which are known for keeping mosquitoes away. There is a significant difference though between citronella candles and candles containing the oils.
If your candle does not contain actual citronella oil, it will not be effective at repelling mosquitoes. That is an important thing to consider when buying a candle. Look at the percentage of citronella oil in the candle because that is going to determine the effectiveness of it. Anything less than 3% is not worth buying.
How Do Citronella Candles Work?
The main purpose of the citronella oil is to mask the smells that mosquitoes are attracted to. They do not like the smell of the oil, but they love carbon dioxide and lactic acid. Humans produce both of these gases, so mosquitoes become highly attracted to backyard parties and other events.
Citronella candles cover up those smells and keep the mosquitoes away. The only thing citronella candles will not do is kill the pests surrounding your home, so once the candle is out, they will be back.
What To Do If Your Candles Are Not Helping
There is never a 100% guarantee that the candles will help at all but there are a few things you can do to increase the likelihood that you will have success in your situation.
Try Adding More Candles
Sometimes one candle isn’t enough. Mosquitoes need to be consistently exposed to the citronella oil to stay away so if you venture too far away from the candle you run the risk of being bitten. The best way to use the candles is to create a perimeter around the area you are trying to protect. Even if you do not have any candles in the center of the area-the surrounding perimeter will keep the mosquitoes from entering, and you will be able to protect a larger area this way.
Cut the Wick Down
If the wick on your candle is long and the flame is burning high above the oil, it may not be burning hot enough and creating enough gas to keep the mosquitoes away. If you have been burning the candle for a while and you still see that not much of it has turned into a liquid than consider cutting the wick and letting it burn closer to the oil. The more gas you create, the better chance you have at protecting yourself.
Check the Percentage of Citronella in the Candle
If your candle has less than 3% pure citronella oil in it than it’s not going to be very useful. You need the strongest candle you can find to protect yourself, so it’s important to find one with a good concentration of pure citronella oil. This is the only way to protect your yard from mosquitoes.
