  • Around $17 for 8 stakes
  • Active Ingredients: Sodium Nitrate, Sulfur and Charcoal

Another bonus of these ingredients is that can repel several types of pests. Customers on amazon do love these even though they smell.

We love the ease of use of this product. No spraying, to spreading granules and then watering them to activate. Just place these into the openings of burrows wherever you see them, and you’re done. These are also a great product to combine with other deterrents because of the lack of concern over mixing chemicals.

Additional Ways To Get Rid Of Groundhogs

If using standard store items are not for you than there are a few household items that drive groundhogs away as well. In this section, we’re going to provide you with a few additional ways to keep these giant rodents away from your yard.

Eggs

This is a method that is taught by a lot of people, and there is no understanding as to why it’s useful, but it works for us. The way you do this is by locating a burrow, cracking an open, and pouring it down into the burrow. Once you have poured an egg or two down into the hole, cover it up with dirt and leave it alone for a few days. You may have to do this a few times, but after about two weeks the groundhogs should be gone, and you will not have to do it again for a while. This is a short-term solution and does not last forever but it’s almost free, and it works.

Castor Oil

This is the primary ingredient in a lot of the stuff you buy in the stores so you could use the pure oil if you want. Take a teaspoon of castor oil and mix it with two cups of water. Pour the mixture down into the burrow and cover it with dirt.

If you like you could also put the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it around the yard to ensure that the groundhogs do not come back. The smell will make your yard appear undesirable to them so they will not burrow anywhere in the yard.

Pepper

We have talked about this one a few times, and this is an age-old method for getting rid of groundhogs. Sprinkle some pepper into the holes and around your yard, and the groundhogs will run away. You can also do just like the castor oil and mix a little cayenne pepper sauce with water and place it in a spray bottle. Walk around your yard spraying everywhere you can, and this will make your yard highly undesirable to the groundhogs.

Smoking Them Out

Smoke kills the groundhog while it is inside the burrow. The easiest way is to buy gas bombs and fill the burrow up. They get sold at garden centers and online. Make sure they are inside the hole before fumigating. This may take a bit of time for your to guarantee the groundhog is home. Once you’re sure the groundhog is inside, fill all of the entrances except one. Then light the gas cartridge, throw it into the open access, and quickly fill it up with dirt to trap the groundhog and the carbon monoxide inside.

If you do not want to kill the groundhogs, don’t cover the hole. The smoke will drive them out without killing them.

Using Ammonia

One of our favorite strategies for getting rid of groundhogs is to pour ammonia down their tunnel; this does not always kill them, but it ensures that they will no longer use that tunnel. This guarantees you get rid of every single groundhog in that tunnel and that they do not come back.

We have used this method many times and have had nothing but success with it. The groundhogs typically leave the yard immediately, and we do not find any holes in the yard again for years. Make sure you see all of the holes because there are almost always six or seven of them. You may need to do this for as long as seven days to effectively scare them away for good.
