The Bottom Line

Advion Ant Gel can eliminate your ant problem quickly and effectively, no matter what kind of species you are dealing with. The gel bait gets to the root of the problem by enticing worker ants to deliver the poison directly to the queen ant and the rest of the colony. This product comes with pre-filled tubes and an easy-application plunger, so you can easily place the bait and watch it do its job. Keep in mind that this product does not come with bait stations, so you will need to make sure your pets and children will not come into contact with the gel. After ants ingest the bait, the colony will die off in a matter of days.

Ease of Use

If you purchase the Advion Ant Gel insecticide with 4 tubes, you also receive one plunger that can be reused with each of the tubes. All you need to do is attach the plunger to one end of a tube and push down wherever you are ready to dispense the gel bait. To start, use a small dot in the areas where you have already seen ants. In a few minutes, the ants will detect the attractive bait, ingest it and take some back to the rest of their colony. After a few days, the entire colony of ants is controlled, and your infestation is solved. Make sure you are practicing pest control methods while using the bait, such as keeping your home clean and storing food properly.

Active Ant Killing Ingredients

Each 30-gram tube of bait contains 0.5% Indoxacarb which is a pesticide that works against ants and their larvae. The chemical affects the nerve function, paralyzing, and ultimately killing them. Though the bait is non-resistant to ants, it can be for other pests. Be sure you are only using this product for ants, as recommended, or you may end up having another pest problem on your hands.

The EPA has classified Indoxacarb as a reduced-risk pesticide, meaning it has lower toxicity compared to others. If ingested, it will not cause long-term side effects as long as it is treated immediately.

Because Advion recommends using a small amount of the bait at a time, any accidental consumption is likely to be a tiny amount and, therefore, minimal risk to a pet or person.

Is Advion Ant Gel Bait Safe for my Family and Pets?

Because the Advion Ant Gel tubes do not come with bait stations, they are not the safest option for a household with pets and small children. The bait must be placed in small drops throughout the floor of your home, which means a dog or cat could easily ingest it. However, the active ingredient, Indoxacarb, is known to be less toxic than other pesticides. If a person or pet happens to swallow the ant bait accidentally, be sure to watch for any signs of a reaction.

However, if you do see any signs of a reaction, call your local poison control center immediately. Most effects of Indoxacarb are significantly mitigated when they are treated right away.

We read through dozens of Amazons interviews – both good and bad – about the Advion Ant Gel. Though some users did report that they did not see the bait working, most reviewers saw ants coming to eat the bait in a matter of minutes. It does take a matter of days for the entire colony to eat the bait, but at that point, the whole colony is killed off, and you should not see any more ants. If you do not feel the bait is working fast enough, try placing it in different areas around your home.

Does Advion Ant Gel Bait Work?

Advion Ant Gel Bait works in minutes to attract different species of ants in minutes. After ants ingest the bait, the active ingredient works to affect their nervous system, ultimately paralyzing and killing the ants. Because of the way ants structure their colonies, the ants that initially find the bait will automatically take some back to ants that are still in the nest. After a couple of days, the bait will have made its way around the entire colony to kill it off effectively.

Some reviewers felt that the bait did not work as fast as promised. If this happens to you, try using the bait in different areas around your home until you see ants starting to eat the bait.

Most users only need to use a dot of bait to appeal to ants. Once the bait is gone, you can reapply – this is usually required at least once a day. If you have a small infestation, you probably will not need to use an entire tube. Luckily, the formulation maintains its integrity for an extended time so that you can reuse the bait for quite a while.

How Does it Work?

Advion Ant Gel works by luring in ants and killing them off as they share the bait amongst the colony.

For the bait to be most effective, it is important that you do not tamper with any ants you see while the bait is out. If you start killing ants that you see around the bait, they will not be able to take the bait back to their colony. Killing the worker ants leaves the remainder of the ants in the nest to continue reproducing.

Comparing Advion Ant Gel Bait

Advion vs. Combat Indoor and Outdoor Ant Killing Gel

Combat Indoor and Outdoor Ant Killing Gel is very similar to Advion, though it has a couple of crucial differences. First, the Combat comes in a single pack, while Advion gel is available in a set of four tubes. While four tubes may seem like a lot, remember that the Advion gel is long-lasting and will not expire for quite a while. By offering the multi-pack of slightly larger tubes, the Advion gels are somewhat more cost-effective.

Combat’s gels use a different active ingredient than Advion, which is Fipronil. Fipronil is a similar pesticide to the Indoxacarb in Advion’s bait in that it is not toxic unless ingested in large amounts. Overall, these two products are very comparable though Advion may be a better option if you have a significant ant problem.

Advion vs. Optigard Ant Bait Gel

Optigard Ant Gel Bait is slightly more cost-effective than the Advion ant gels. With Optigard, you can similarly purchase a pack of 4 tubes with an additional plunger. One unique aspect of the Optigard bait is that it is supposed to work even after the gel has dried out, requiring less maintenance than the Advion gel.

When we read through Amazon reviews, we saw that Optigard users did not always find it sufficient for their ant problem, much like Advion.

Advion vs. Terro T200 Liquid Ant Killer

Terro Liquid Ant Killer comes in a tube with a flip cap instead of a tube with a plunger. In comparison to the Advion gel, this could make it harder to control the amount of product you are using, thus using more than you may need. However, Terro bait is one of the most cost-effective ant bait options at less than $5 per tube. Because it may be slightly more difficult to control the amount of Terro Ant Killer that you use, consider opting for Advion for larger infestations.

Similar to the Advion gel bait, the Terro does not come with a bait station, meaning it could be harmful to pets or small children.
